Who writes for the marimba?

The marimba has the distinction of being an instrument of our time. Consequently, most of the music we play has been written within the last forty years. Many of the most widely known composers of recent times have written for the instrument:

  • Jacob Druckman
  • Steve Reich
  • Augusta Read Thomas
  • Joseph Schwantner
  • Milton Babbitt

Also, many great marimbists write music for themselves and others to play, including:

  • Gordon Stout
  • Michael Burritt
  • Eric Sammut
  • Keiko Abe

And many others.

However, the new music scene in general, and the marimba scene specifically, can be a little below the radar. There are many great composers who have also written for the marimba, but have not yet acquired the visability of the above composers.

I am constantly seeking out composers to collaborate with to bring new works to life. My completed and ongoing projects include collaborations with: Allan Schindler, Augusta Read Thomas, Greg Wilder, Stephen Dembski, Kevin Ernste.
