The term Hybrid SACD refers to the fact the single disc contains three versions of the album: normal CD quality stereo, super high-definition stereo, and super high-definition surround. You can play the CD layer of the disc in any CD player, but to access the high-definition versions you need an SACD player.
The surround capability of SACD is perfect for this project in many ways. The computer-generated sounds for the Schindler and Wilder compositions were originally composed in four channels of 24bit/96kHz (Wilder is 24bit/88.2kHz) audio. The SACD format allowed me to record these works in their "true" surround, hi-fi format. Also, the Reich has been mixed in such a way as to create a circle of marimbas - with the listener in the center! This antiphonal mixing brings an incredible level of clarity to the counterpoint. However, even for the unaccompanied works by Glass and Thomas, the surround format is truly stunning sound coming from all around, just like in a live concert.
