In August 2006 my debut solo marimba album was released.
Title: PRECPICE modern marimba
Label: Albany Records
Format: Hybrid Multi-Channel Super Audio Compact Disc - contains three versions of the album on the SAME disc: super high-definition 5-channel suround, super high-definition stereo, and CD stereo (plays on normal CD players).
One of my goals in this recording project was to create a well balanced album, and not simply a collection of unrelated material. The content of this album, as well as the contents' order, was carefully chosen to form a program with a prelude, interlude, and postlude, with two featured works in between. With this in mind, it is my hope that this album can be listened to in its entirety, and that the artistic impact of the album as a whole will be much greater than the sum of the works.

Opening: Philip Glass
Precipice - for marimba and computer-generated sounds: Allan Schindler
Interlude - for marimba and computer-generated sounds: Greg Wilder
Silhouettes: Augusta Read Thomas
- Like ToruTakemitsu crossed with Bill Evans
- Like Igor Stravinsky crossed with Thelonious Monk
- Like Pierre Boulez crossed with Oscar Peterson
- Like Bela Bartok crossed with Art Tatum
Vermont Counterpoint: Steve Reich
(Marimba Version, N. Bartlett)
It is a shame to have to downgrade five channels of high-definition audio to two channels of low-definition (mp3) audio for a website. However, these samples should still be a good introduction to some of the music on the album - two excerpts from Precipice - for marimba and computer-generated sounds, by Allan Schindler, and two excerpts from Interlude - for marimba and computer-generated sounds, by Greg Wilder. The first excerpt is very long (10 min.) to try to give some idea of the large scope of Precipice (18 min.). Enjoy!
