Marimba recitals are by no means mainstream phenomena (unfortunately, no new music or art is). However, the marimba scene is larger than you might think.

One of the first places to look is at your local university or music conservatory. The marimba and percussion students at these institutions give frequent (and frequently free) recitals - open to the public. Also, the percussion departments at these institutions usually bring in professional marimbists a few times a year for concerts and masterclasses.
